Mob Ties has had a guaranteed number 1 spot on DD since the site update that is not based on its current ranking and will never change.
As if this wasn't frustrating enough…Mob Ties is now on Hiatus indeffinitely at the moment.
So the number one flag ship comic for DD that is always on the top spot on the front page….is not updating anymore.
I think that says it all about the state of DD these days.

Just to add salt to the wounds....
There's been no peeps from Wowio. They're running on a skeleton crew over there, from what I understand, and mostly just hanging in there til they can do some pulic stock option thing I don't know much about.
Yup oz and I can change them, the mechanic we can manipulate is unique visits. So if we want a comic to be #1 we go put in a number like 50,000. We can't change the way the list works because it's static. It's just looking at whatever we put in that number box.
As oz said being fair is hard. He discoverd that we could change those up quite some time ago (and then I got annoyed that he changed one I thought was unfair, can't remember exactly). We've not to problem ousting ones which have gone on hiatus, I think Persona3FTW has been off a while, and Cru was off temporarily? We thought the most fair thing to replace them as would be community projects, but there's not too many of them active right now, and we also didn't want to oust legitimately updating, popular comics like Charby.
If you guys can give us a list of community comics which are more or less regularly updating, we'll see which ones we can safely bump off the top ten. :]
- Radio Play
- Heroes Alliance/Hero Factor/Lite Bites/?

Wasn't that the DD Christmas Gift comic? I remember it being put on the top 10 list to promote all the people who were contributing to it. It's still on the list, btw.
If we went with the most "likes" wouldn't Death Porn be in the top ten?
I'd dump the top ten because it is an insult to lazy hacks with no readers who can't run around screaming "read whatever" because their comic is crap and frankly doesn't deserve any readership and frankly can't and will never attract any readers.

Put my badly-pencil-drawn stick figure comic as #1, just for a week.
I just want to see the reaction of the more technical/talented/"top tier" DD members. It's the perfect way to troll people on this site. And then after the torches and pitch forks come after us, put back whatever was there and run like hell.

Just the heck of it let's have the bottom ten of still updating comics by persons who participlate on the boards.
I think having the Top 10 from a year ago up there made sense as a brief interim solution while things were being hammered out, but at this point it's hard to find good justification for keeping them up there.
I think this was suggested once before, but I'll re-suggest it: Those spots would be put to better use spotlighting community projects, stuff like the radio play and drunk duck awards. That might help draw some attention and potentially some more participation.

I'll give this suggestion a thumbs up.
But the best long term solution would of course be to fix the damn tracker that used to monitor the top 10 list.
El Cid wrote:If "by suggested once before" you mean that we have done that with a couple of them, and I just said it in this thread and asked for some currently updating community comics, yes :]

I forgot to mention in my earlier post, but we didn't want to go by most likes because that's basically what the Browse Comics page defaults to. Plus we'd have to check that periodically to reflect the most current top ten, maybe? Not sure how static that top 10 is.
I was just noticing this a while ago, too. So I went through the top ten:
Mob Ties: Hiatus
Cru the Dwarf: Hasn't updated in ten months
P4 the Win: Ended
Geminni: Ended
skoolmunkee wrote:Yeah, I think "Likes" would be a bad idea, too. That system is fairly easy to manipulate, and since you can't un-Like a comic, it's just as irreversible as the current Top Ten… "Like" numbers don't go down when people stop reading.

You're right, I think community projects is the only fair way to do it… though I suppose there needs to be ten actual community projects.
The radio play comic will be updating daily for about 3 weeks and several (most?) of the artists have had their comic/s featured. So, there's some great stuff, but there's an end date in sight.
Meanwhile, Duck and Quail and Lite Bites have been going strong for awhile.
