Tumblr Exodus because of bans on adult content

Has this affected any of you or anyone you know?
I've heard about it a lot from people and try and encourage them to come here since unlike Tumblr or Pornhub (where many are going now) THIS is actually a comic site designed for comics and has accepted adult comics since 2002!

I'd just as everyone to help publicise that if you can.
It's not that I want to turn DD into a mecha for porn comics, it's just that we've always had that capacity and it's a real shame that people don't realise it.

Facebook is doing the same thing, and twitter's next, too. They are not the last ones either.

Google is delisting and demonetizing sites already, and for fairly inoffensive things like Halloween decorations.

It's not just banning porn, they are banning any reference to sex, preferences and orientation, terms and slang, frank discussions/educational, art and erotic writing, NON-erotic nudity, absolutely anything remotely "queer" oriented.

This is puritanical, overreaching and unprecedented censorship of the internet as a whole. It's happening because of SESTA-FOSTA, (Link1 Link2)two turd sandwich laws that were voted bipartisan to protect "victims of sex trafficking" while ignoring all the facts about how victims are found and rescued PRIMARILY through the internet, because it was never about that– it was always about pushing censorship.

The law as it stands dictates that sites can be sued for "knowingly" hosting content they deem inappropriate– you can sure bet they'll start coming for the smaller sites after they've scrubbed Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and every other big mainstream site of any hint of human sexuality. Facebook can take the litigational hit– smaller sites cannot.

There's some talk of trying to repeal these laws, let's hope for the sake of all of us internet dwellers that there's some success there.

I also wanna add, I don't even look at porn, but that doesn't matter– innocent people are getting caught up in this and losing their income, don't believe for a second this is an actual crusade to save victims of slavery and child abuse– this is pure corporate control of content, and both sides; liberal and conservative– were duped into supporting these bills because of the deceptive language.
It's not like people didn't raise red flags before these became law, but just like Net Neutrality before it, people who actually know what the hell they were talking about were ignored in favor of bought-and-paid-for politicians, lobbyists, and the good intentions of a woefully misinformed and gullible public.

Sorry but the whole thing has me mad as hell and not because I even remotely care about porn personally, but because it infringes on so much more than someone's right to post salacious content on the internet. This is corporate interests taking precedent over everything else that makes the internet what it is. They have made clear they want it to be the Victorian age because it makes "the brand look bad" to have an ad next to someone talking about breast cancer.

I would hope that this, along with the recent spate of abuses by popular social media platforms, will spur the development of some viable truly independent alternatives. I've seen this story too many times: As soon as you get advertisers and shareholders involved, it's only a matter of time before the place gets turned into Disney Land.

Jeez… I'm glad we set up our OWN ad system so we're not beholden to advertisers.
Google has been screwing DD over for years for crap like not having a mobile site or not having HTTPS- when we DON'T actually NEED it! Seriously. We HAD to pay all sorts of cash to get this big, hulking site converted to HTTPS… ugh, I still remember all the self hosting word press comic people saying how easy and free it was to get HTTPS. Sure, if you have a piddling little site anything is cheap.

So basically we exist in SPITE of Google at the moment.

——————-

Porn isn't a prime concern for me either but I like that it exists and I'm all for the full and free expression of normal adult interests, from family friendly through to sexuality, sexual health, art, and porn.

This ties heavily into my podcast topic "the new prudes" https://next.theduckwebcomics.com/quackcast/episode-401-stan-lee-a-stupid-comedian-and-the-new-prudes

Whenever a person's stated motive is to "protect" people, very soon that tends to morph into something evil… an overbearing patriarchalisim where abuses exist and flourish more than ever because now they have the freedom of secrecy.

Yup, and I want to be clear I'm not shaming anyone for being into porn just because it's not my thing, either. A whole lot of my friends had NSFW side blogs that I just didn't look at, I realize I'm a bit of an outlier when it comes to all that, and it's a bummer they have to lose all their work.

There's no doubt the Evangelical Right is driving this anti-sex censorship when a LOT of it is deliberately targeting LGBTQA+ language and communities, but there's one thing they care about more than sanctimonious moralizing and purity policing, and that's money, money, money.

Sadly, Americans prove again and again that they won't pay attention to the fine print, and Useful Idiots can be sent into any discussion of dissent to sow uncertainty with their well-scripted but flimsy counterpoints to the valid concerns people raise.
____________________________

Augh, that sounds like a PAIN to deal with, but I'm glad DD is existing out of pure spite, haha! :D Here's hoping we all survive the next round of attacks on internet freedoms, caught wind they're cooking up a doozy with copyright law… H.R. 1695/S.1010 is what it's called but there hasn't been a whole lot of discussion from the trusted sources yet, I think it's because everyone is distracted, and that's how these bastiches like it.

I have a tumblr but I barely use it, it’s mostly just for fun things to look up, but I had some art friends on there, they pretty much are not happy with how things are going. I did however try to get them over here only because I think this site is the only one I know of that has freedom of expression.

I had to have a friend tell me why they were banning content on tumblr, I didn’t know what was going on.

I don’t say much but I do like this place because of the acceptance of art forms. That and you guys are really friendly. But I will try to inform others about this place.

True. It's the crazed Evangelicals that are driving it but useful idiots from all side of the political spectrum get in on it. On the left the narrative is about "objectification" and "Sexualisation". The fact that the terms are misused isn't a clue to these people that the augments aren't even their own…

Hi, I'm Eustacheus and I'm a tumblr refugee.

I have a blog where I post the german translation of an adult (porn) 700 page and ongoing webcomic by another author (with his permission, of course). And since last week I'm looking for a new home. I was considering to create a wordpress site but there's just too much legal stuff, I don't want to mess with (german and european laws that force me to put my full name and address on the page, etc.). I also asked the original author if he would put it on his site but he declined, because… reasons.

This looks like a cozy place. And since you also host german comics, I thought I'd give it a try.
What do you think?

Go Ahead! Pleased to have you here and any others that you know who're in a similar position Eustacheus :D

Just give the work an adult rating and you're good!

This is harming small businesses and content creators who want to do their own thing. If this keeps going, another website could come in and annihilate the competition, which I encourage.

This neo-liberal, puritanical line of thinking is going to get people hurt. It's already hard enough as it is already to find a decent job in the marketplace. This is Big Businesses saying, "All these creators are a threat!"

TBH I'm glad this site manage to make income without Google or any big sites. Because this is ridiculous.

It takes a lot of work to manage, hahaha! If I and the other admins here were being paid for the time we put into this place to keep it running the site wouldn't be able to afford us.
We only survive because we're in a "dedicated amateur" sort of mode, which means we provide pro service and put in thousands of hours of work for free and for the love of it.

Sometimes it doesn't seem worth it but mostly it does and I'm proud of what we've done with the site.

Heh, I actually left tumblr 3 years ago. Not because of the porn (which, funny enough, I never actually drew any of in terms of NSFW content) but because it was basically female 4Chan: a world where dreams and nightmares came true in a way that pushed too many of your buttons to be deemed credible. Not a day goes by that I dont regret making a 60 page Steven Universe comic all because I tried a nab at English humor afterwards with two yonkoma (or gokoma) comics dealing with postmenstrual stress and Shadman. I know better now, but the pms one was written by a friend and the Shadman one was strictly dialogue driven, and even THEN they were still fairly PG compared to what Hiromu Arakawa did in FMA editorials. XP

The whole 21st century thus far has been a bad time to come into or back or have any interaction at all with the internet. :D

But everything could change tomorrow, which is the joy of living in this ever changing information age.

Ah yes, The day Tumblr shot itself in the foot. Haha - I was not on there in any comic capacity, so there was no detrimental effect on me. My "L,N,S" stuff was on here (and Fury) so nice and safe (even from readers, apparently B-) )
I don't think I'd even seen Tumblr, when I first kicked off here…
But once I did, I found adding "on Tumblr" to any search for lewd and explicit material got instant results ! B-) …so it's prudish move has reduced my porn viewing considerably . Serves me right for being a dirty old man, eh!?
The irony is that IT's done what the old "Comics Code" did for 'us', back in the wonderful days of McCarthyism and anal retentiveness. A code that had been largely ditched before the turn of the 21st C .

The cool thing about dd is we're a duck that flies under the radar XD

Even Comic Fury has restrictions on the adult material they can have.

I kinda use Tumblr? Mostly for reblogging stuff I like, although I do have some side blogs for my art and comics. Posting on there isn't something I take very seriously, though. The site is awful when it comes to getting your work noticed, and if you're posting a webcomic there you may as well be hanging your pages on the walls of a damp cave in the Antarctic. A couple of my, extremely G rated non-nude/non-sexual, lineart sketches were taken down by their anti-porn bots, but the mistake was fixed pretty quickly after sending an appeal.
I also had a dead blog for all my old porn illustrations which was totally thrashed. Not much of a problem for me since I can't be arsed to draw that stuff anymore, and never made anything off it. I do feel for all the people trying to make a living, though. Hentai Foundry and Fur Affinity seem like the only good options for adult content illustrators anymore.

Pff I've actually recommended DD a lot to people making adult or more mature content that needs censoring on other sites like SJ, Tapas and Webtoons. Normally the gripe is the size of the readerbase, people from the latter two sites are especially focused on size since that's all that matters… at least on Webtoons, what a shithole. Also the lack of mobile, which I get… I guess? I'm not much of a mobile type, though some people say they read that way due to a disability. (I wouldn't know what, they never say what it is)For the readerbase thing, people don't seem to realize you need to actually start using a platform to add to it, new people don't just poof into existence. At least sometimes they're genuinely happy, and have never heard of DD before me mentioning it.

This may be bias since DD was the first webcomic hosting site I discovered and started posting on, but I prefer it over the other webcomic hosts. I don't dabble in a whole lot of weird personally, but I'm really big on anti-censorship, and being able to creator whatever messed up and/or sexual stuff you want. (As long as they're not hurting real people) It's nice having a site where you can post whatever. Also, other than SJ and CF, the communities for the other sites suuuuuck… if they even have a community to begin with. -coughwebtoonscough- People are so cliquey which is something I hate for webcomics, and that puritan shit is contaminating everything. Can't tell you how many PMs and asks I've gotten calling me some monster because I have uncomfortable subjects in my comic.

AWESOME to read :D

We will definitely optimise the site for mobile when we can pay for it…
And yeah, people have to get their readers in. It takes work- be part of the community, comment on popular comics or advertise externally and do the social media thing. It's always been that way.

I never really 'got' Tumblr, but I did have a private art blog there. A bunch of my posts were flagged even though none of them were explicit. I clicked the appeal button and several days later the flags were removed. To those who were effected, I recommend migrating to Newgrounds. They love adult art and anything cartoony.
