I avoided this like the plague. When people started answering with "Yarrrr, scallywag" I just walked away mid conversation.

Yet you still felt the need to come here and stick your oar in.

Oar, geddit?! Stick your oar in???

Oh nevermind.

Didn't say I want people to quit doing it. Just voicing my opinion.
And yes. Clever pun. Nautical themed.

Ooh!

Point of fact, Same knew about the Irish town Muff, which makes me think he may well be Irish.

And everybody knows that Pirate Speak, with the "tis"s, "dat"s and "'o"s, IS Irish. So, methinks it could be that Everyday is Speak-Like-A-Pirate-Day for same, I mean, some, and we rank amateurs don't do it right.

:) *This is almost as fun as speaking like a pirate.*

An interesting speculation, but pirate talk was actually invented by Robert Newton in 1950 and he based the accent on his native West Country (southwest England) dialect, where they actually do say aaaarrrrrr!

Admittedly, "aaaarrrrrr" was conspicous by its absence from the list. I hadn't realized that it was a Word, sounded like a groan, the way people complain about their rheumatism or such. With all those peg legs, seemed like they matched up to all those aaaarrrrs.

But, yes, as Same demonstrated, aaaaarrr is pronounced Ack in Irish. There you go.

——— (wildebeest announcement)

But what I find REALLY intriguing is the concept of inventing a speech. Let's Do that. Let's invent a speech or dialect or sumppin :)

But since many pirates DID come from the West Country, it might really have been one of the accents found out there on the high seas! :)

I'm sure it was and he probably had that in mind at the time. It's just that before he made that film, nobody really thought about pirate talk as a concept. Take highwaymen for example; if I asked you to talk like a highwayman you'd probably wonder what I'd been drinking, but if Robert Newton had played Dick Turpin instead of Long John Silver, maybe we'd be having Talk Like A Highwayman day instead!

I loved that movie, Deanna Troi topless. Ahhhh…

— (naturalist voiceover: gay wildebeasts feeding on grass by a stream and the lioness is creeping up on them…)

As for Highwaymen no one beats:

Dennis Moore, Dennis Moore riding through the land, soon every lupin in the land will be in his mighty hand, et cetera…

We could have "talk like Bushranger day… That's the Aussie equivalent of the highway man.
They wouldn't sound too Aussie though, since most were first or second generation British of Irish.

That may be a better one since Bushranger doesn't imply a gender as highwayman does. We certainly don't want exclude anyone from speaking daft made up dialects!

Also, we can constantly refer to all those great sounding Aussie things like Bilabongs and such. The temptation is just to refer to everyone as 'cobber' though.
