But since many pirates DID come from the West Country, it might really have been one of the accents found out there on the high seas! :)
I'm sure it was and he probably had that in mind at the time. It's just that before he made that film, nobody really thought about pirate talk as a concept.

Brooklyn talk sounds terrifying!Not only terrifying (it is), but already pretty well established. Not really creating something new that way.
The pirate speak was also very well established so much so that Monty Python used it in the series. Remember the football game against the Long John Silver imitators? Or the Long John Silver wing of the mental hospital skit?
