I'm gonna vote for Flying Green Monkey because he wrote me personally with a request to vote for him. He was the only one who did so.

That's right. It was that pathetically easy to get my vote.

Such is the fate of all elections where a chunk of the voters have absolutely no grasp on the actual issues.

This explains more than one presidential election, and it also explains the rampant popularity of voting for American Idol.
