Drunk Duck is at Mastodon

Posted at

Since twitter is imploding and it's migration season, DD has also migrated to mastodon. You'll find us here so come on, if you're on mastodon, follow. We follow back. Goes without say that all events happening on twitter will also happen on Mastodon, probably at a latency for now unless there's magic Em can do. XD

Apparently there are cross-posters which will send those tweets to Mastodon, one being crossposter.masto.donte.com.br

For those looking to join, the initial need to pick an instance/server can seem like a barrier, but don't be alarmed. I joined on mastodon.art, which is listed as invitation only but my application was accepted within the hour. You can also switch to another server later and all of your followers/follows remain intact.

Selling points? There are no algorithms deciding what you should see, no billionare ownership (this is where the multi server thing comes in) and a pronounced lack of fascism.

edit: so it looks as though using a cross-poster might result in your posts being hidden behind a warning on some servers.

Honestly, I'm glad I left Twitter when I did months ago, although it had nothing to do with Elon Musk, or the GOP, or any of that stuff; I left because Twitter has honestly devolved into nothing more than a tremendously huge dumpster fire, where the only kind of discourse anybody is willing to engage in is making mountains out of molehills with flame wars whenever somebody tweets about an unpopular opinion that people want to argue about (God forbid you discuss your thoughts about animation on Twitter) - not to mention how it's become such a troll playground . . . in a sense, Twitter has become what Reddit used to be, while Reddit appears to have become what Twitter used to be.

That, and for absolutely no reason whatsoever, my best friend of 17 years unfollowed and blocked me - and this after she just had just found me again after we lost contact with one another for a few years while she rehabbed a serious head injury in which she incurred some actual brain damage.

Reddit will probably get a boost from the current situation too, I might try it.
What I like about twitter is the ability to discover and follow lots of other creators. It's been better for that than any other social media, if you can stay clear of the swamp. I'll stay for now, but those advantages may soon disappear. What I dislike is how it amplifies all the worst aspects of human nature for profit.

I mean, yeah, I will agree that one of the things I did enjoy was following certain other people on Twitter - on very rare occasions, sometimes they would even respond to me, such as Greg DeLisle-Griffin; her crass sense of humor was very fun to engage in. But in the end, the constant flame wars and big drawn-out debates over my (unpopular) opinions wasn't worth it. I mean seriously, I could tweet about any new updates regarding my work or creations, and get nothing, but I tweet about how much I hate Taylor Swift, or why I prefer pre-2010s animation, then suddenly I'm bombarded with the masses lashing out at me.

I've not heard of Mastodon before, but from a glance it looks like a mix between tumblr/discord. Which sounds horrifying in its own right, lmao.

Mastodon is more like twitter but no one person owns it, you can host your own server instance with its own rules and build your own community or join others', no one big set of rules. Only the communication between instances might seem a bit complicated at first. The best part is still that tweets are called "toots".

That's a definite plus point! Also nobody can see your likes, which should avoid the desperate like chasing culture of other sites. If nobody likes your post, follow it up with another one thanking everyone for the great response you just had.(don't actually do that)

Sounds like discord to me, plus more discoverability i guess? Lets you find other channels/users more easily? With discord you usually had to know a guy who knows a guy to get into the niche interest channels.

Does Mastodon allow NSFW content as a general rule? That's the one thing i'll give to twitter, it's a porn haven. NSFW as far as the eye could see. N-Not that i would know anything about that… >.>

Yeah you can post NSFW stuff on Mastodon! Depending on the instance you pick, they just ask for a CW (content warning) and you just post away. Especially in the mastodon.art instance where DD is, they explicitly stated that.

Feel like if I don't join the huge art instance you're on and don't risk getting myself banned for "microagressions" (idk if people are allowed to shit on privileged groups or not, but I'm gonna go with yes) I'll never build a follower base. But even if I'd try, the server doesn't accept new joins until they dealt with a waiting list or something because of the new sign ups.

There are more art related instances with similar rules. Also I think there's one that's completely dedicated to comics (which I didn't know about when I made DD's account) so do ask around!

I'll do some research, it just appears, that there's 12 000 users on Art, while most others a few hundreds tops. That's quite the gap. Wonder why.

The former world's richest man is currently banning all Mastodon links on twitter. If that doesn't tell you all you need to know, he's also banning journalists he disapproves of, claiming they are all doxing him. It's a meltdown of impressive proportions.

On a completely unrelated note, Mastodon is experiencing a surge in new signups again, so be patient if yours is pending. They weren't expecting so much free publicity.

I read about that haha! He's a pretty sad case.
100% commitment to free speech unless it's about him, then it's "doxing" (none of it was doxing). And he reinstates trump, the guy banned for TRYING TO STEAL THE ELECTION OF THE MOST POWERFUL COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.
Jebus… sometimes we're in bizzaro world.

In any case: Thumbs up for DD on Mastodon!

I've been dropping the ball massively on working on that account, but I'm trying to set up some kind of routine/schedule to be able to manage all the DD socials. So sorry for this, guys. But now with adding Blue Sky to the mix, I'll see to it to somehow not be such a deadbeat duck on social media XD
