whiskey, redheads, potatoes, fighters, short & stocky, beards, catholic.
i think those cover most the stereotypical irish genre's. except for the women.

We already had a thread like that.
Was it that thread I made about those legendary gods and such?
I was thinking of a thread about heroes like Hercules, Beowolf(spelling?), King Arthur, Chief Gadao(the most powerful legendary chief on Guam), etc… And the adventures they had. :)
Heh.
Wiki reckons Finn is Irish but mentioned in Scottish myth…
All I've heard about him he was in Scottish myth, as a great hero. And the song/story was by Robin Williamson, silly me. He was playing with John Renbourne at the time though.Hell, just trying to discern the differences between Irish, Scottish and the stuff that is Anglo/Roman influenced is weird. I still can't figure out what the hell the difference between Scottish and Irish bagpipes is. I'm not even touching on sheep for this. That subject is clearly a Welsh thing.I think traditionally Irish bagpipes used a foot pump or something,…? Now I can't recall if that was to fill them (instead of blowing in), or if that's to keep the pressure on (instead of squeezing the bag with your elbow).
The Celtic harp is one of the most iconic Irish symbols. And of course Guinness beer or Kilkenny Ale. They're well known but not rubbish cliches like shamrocks and leprechauns.
So you're looking for national symbols? There's their flag, their football/soccer team, Horses (they breed fantastic racehorses), U2, Aer Lingus…
If you want contemporay stuff you could always read a current Irish newspaper online ;)
Yeah, Fin is Irish, but he's the crossover between Irish and Scottish culture with the tale of the giant's causeway in Ireland and Fin's Cave in Scotland.
Here, the harp is as bad a stereotype as the shamrock and beer or other alcohol is not allowed since this is for a family event, but the flag and other stuff is something I think I'm going to look into. Thanks for the ideas.
It's a poster for Irishfest, which is an international event on it's 30th year, meaning a crap load of scrutiny over accuracy and a massive pressure from the organizers to come up with new ideas that will stand the test of time. Plus, I'm supposed to avoid all identifiable famous people, avoid specific family or team colours if I do something like a Celtic dance group, for various reasons including copyright and not featuring one group over another. These people are incredibly picky, which is why I'm having so much difficulty with coming up with ideas that will be accurate, original and non-stereotypical, yet still accessible enough for casual visitors to the festival. The list of things I have to avoid is longer than the list of stuff I can cover. Oddly enough, the 30th anniversary logo, contains both a shamrock and a leprechaun if I remember right.
Jernit of the love spot, eh? Sounds like a hell of a name to earn yourself. I could have so much fun with that. Too bad this is an all ages event. lol!
Here, the harp is as bad a stereotypeReally? It's one of their most famous and treasured national symbols- since it's not just iconic, but a symbol of art and culture.
I think I'd go for some customised knotwork anyway. That's easy and realy fun the create. It works great as part of decorative motifs…
Jernit of the love spot, eh? Sounds like a hell of a name to earn yourself. I could have so much fun with that. Too bad this is an all ages event.Heh. Apparently Jernit had a mark on his face and he had to keep it covered with his hat because if any woman saw it she'd fall passionately in love with him. He was the greatest hunter in all the land, but he'd never hunt wild boar… lol!
You can listen to that great little track here:
http://www.we7.com/#/track/Finn-And-The-Old-Mans-House-Story-Recorded-Live-at-Old-Town-School-of-Folk-Music-!trackId=70320&m=0
Yeah, I was thinking of using the neolithic swirls and lozenges from the old tombs and stuff as a decorative element, I just need a good concept to put it in. I might just go all Art Nouveau on this deal.
I've been told to avoid the harp because it is so iconic. It's too easy to screw up and get it wrong. Plus, they're terrified it might be mistaken for the Guinness logo. Apparently somebody believes that native Milwaukee residents have some form of mild beer-autism wherein they must relate everything to alcohol.
That is a pretty kickass track. I might have to go looking for more stuff like that. Old stories always give me ideas.
I really wish I knew an Irishman or two so I could ask them questions.I'm not much help, but I think Blarney Castle is a famous landmark (though perhaps too closely related to the Blarney Stone). There's also the celtic cross that you see on gravestones (too grim? too religious?); there are celtic symbols with trees and fish and things; the triskelle; the crowned heart and hands thingy (also related I think to 'fisher kings'); Irish stone circles; there are some famous archaeological stones with lots of swirlies and stuff carved in them. There's also a club-thing but I think that is kind of controversial. I can't comment on the stereotypicalness of them though.
You might also look up irish folk songs/folklore, those might have some iconic characters. Good folk songs, not stereotypical ones like Danny Boy.
Yep, I'm so naive cos hearing the word struggle doesn't immediately make me think of rape. lol

Man, I start out every semester thinking "Okay, I'm really going to apply myself this time! I'll study every night, and do my best on every piece of homework".
And then by the second week I decide a better goal is to try to avoid a nervous breakdown.
I really wish I knew an Irishman or two so I could ask them questions. Trying to figure out what constitutes stereotypical Irish versus obscurely Irish is a real pain in the ass. I mean, obviously 4 leaf clovers, leprechauns, Celtic knot work, pots of gold, that kind of stuff is unsuitable, but I have no idea if stuff like Fin McCool or the Giant's Causeway is too obscure. Hell, just trying to discern the differences between Irish, Scottish and the stuff that is Anglo/Roman influenced is weird. I still can't figure out what the hell the difference between Scottish and Irish bagpipes is. I'm not even touching on sheep for this. That subject is clearly a Welsh thing.
what about the hill of tara? it's an anicent sacred burial ground that's older then the pryamids. there's druid rituals still being conducted there and it's 100% irish.
I was just digging through the wiki for the hill of tara about 10 minutes ago. I might work something from it in. More likely I'm going to end up just tossing a bunch of celtic decorative elements onto a half-related image to make it related.
Thanks for all the help guys. You've all given me some really awesome ideas and stuff to work from.
1. Do the (-#) things go away…EVER? [edit:did what Niccea said on the help forum and it worked!!!]
2. Should logs smell like fish pee?
3. My life is too boring to have anything here for a number three.
I kinda flipped out about this below…
I don't think all the bug errors are done. I clicked on the recent most quote from my comic Pwnd Randomness after it said the pages I updated two days ago were gone but that quote was still there. I got this (Image is kinda too big for forums):
http://www.drunkduck.com/Pwnd_Randomness/gfx/quote%20error.PNG
I'll put this on the Help or Bug thread too.
[Edit 1] Saw Xanadu last night and the only really good part was when Hermes (a black dude) said "Bitch, I don't live your life!". It was the way he said it. Short musical by the way.
[Edit 2] I'm actually working on updating EVERYTHING. I think that's a good thing for me but once I get back to school it's all gonna go bye-bye.
[Edit 3] To Ozone's Post below me. No always. It could just be that as a teenager of my age I didn't enjoy seeing what the 80's contained in recent time. (don't think I worded that right)
druid rituals still being conducted thereDruids are a recreated sect. That culture was wiped out over 1000 years ago -Druids became popular again in the 1800's. And if Tara is older than the pyramids then the Druids got there just as late back in the old days too- Druids being part of the Celtic religion were imported along with the Clets when they migrated to/invaded the British Isles from the 8th to the 1st century BC, supplanting the original cultures.
I think that not many people tend to realise that. :)

Here's a "fun" thought… What if DD had a vampire/zombie apocalypse? And what if some of the DD's vampires sparkled in the sun? And all the zombies wanted to do is to live their own unlives and eat the remaining humans before the vampires can convert them? And how would the still normal characters deal with all this (assuming they're not dieties of any sort or have immunities to being zombified and vampire curses)?
I should stop drinking this gourmet coffee. Not only does it NOT keep me awake, but it's starting to skew my mind. :spin:
Oh, well… I feel sorry for all the local smokers now, though. With that new cigarette tax coming, they've started hoarding all the cigs they can get their hands on (and afford too). The price of cigarettes, cigars, and other smoking stuff is going up by $3 when it takes effect. Hopefully it will help pay for things like our hospital as well as curb the smoking habit… or take it underground like the Prohibition era in the 1920's United States…
I think I'm on a right path of solving my monitor problems. And I hope the new one has good colors, so hten I cna actually SEE what the hell I'm coloring with rather than having to rely on the color names in Photoshop, heh.
Meanwhile I'm just sitting around, reading Absolute Dark Knight I have borrowed from a friend.
The timing is kinda funny though. I've just finished reading Bakuman, got all pumped up for making comics (if they can tackle and overcome their problems, I can tackle and overcome mine!) and was ready to start drawing finally… and then BAM! monitor decides to get some sort of terminal disease. Oh well, it was old and weak already anyway.
Edit: just noticed I got the 666th post in the thread, woo me, I'm the DEVIL!

A little advice: if anyone ever has to take Clindamycin for any reason, be careful about it. I'm currently taking it right now after having a very embarrassing problem removed from a very undisclosed location, and it gives me really bad heartburn.
Keep in mind that I can eat some of the hottest, spiciest shit in the world without feeling heartburn, so that says a lot on how bad this burn is. Milk seems to help dilute the burn a bit, though.
Hopefully, the side effects don't get any worse. I've read up on some pretty bad ones.
Does anyone else get depress when they look at their friend list. I just took a look and most of the people on there are now gone. I miss them T.TI feel like that too. :( I also feel like that too look at my favorited comics. I just can't bring myself to remove them.
I'm snowed into WV again. Currently crashing on a friend's couch.
I'm getting a little homesick. I've been away for ten days. I was visiting a DD friend in another state/timezone for the last week. The roads were a little scary coming back. I was going to meet up with my parents here to make the rest of the trip home, but they can't make it until tomorrow, so I'm semi-stranded at the moment. (But it's good to have a couch to crash on.)
I look forward to the day I can get my own car and not have to rely on others for transportation so much. – But more immediately, I look forward to getting back to my own bed, my cat, and my drawing supplies.
That subject is clearly a Welsh thing.Fun fact my last name is apparently Welsh.

… my friends list is empty… so I should be happier?
Ugh… 5:30 in the morning, and I want to sleep again. Problem is… I slept for 6 hours and just woke up an hour ago. 0_0
Does anyone else get depress when they look at their friend list. I just took a look and most of the people on there are now gone. I miss them T.TI… I'm a heartless so-and-so so once someone becomes inactive I remove them >>; I'm real OCD about orderliness so keeping tabs on people I don't talk to anymore makes it harder to keep tabs on the ones that I do.
And I think I broke one of my molars because my mouth has been in searing pain for like a month, but I don't have dental coverage. I can feel the crack with my tongue that's how bad it is! I'm this close to grabbing a pair of pliers and yanking the sucker out, except that is a bad idea most definitely.
I decided to do two things artistically.
1) Draw enough short stories and oneshots so that I have a buffer for an entire year (and perhaps can bring it up to 3 pages a week)
2) Start drawing the new version of Amen City Chronicles. No idea what schedule this one would be though. 3 or 5 pages a week I guess. I have totally redesigned the story structure. Now that I can do 250 page volumes at Ka-blam and keep them at a reasonable price (in b&w of course), I don't have to try to keep it "one volume=one story" but can alternate between tales, weaving them together through links, visions and characters. In fact, I just wrote a loose take on the opening of the second volume (fiorst one's pretty much written already, just needs some tweaks here and there). Right now I'm thinking 6 volumes :D
Once I have a pile of pages for CC and the second comic chugigng along at a steady pace (b&w should be doable), I can find time to do something else. For now, let's just focus on the things that are already started.
I want to go to bed now. But I can't, because I have to stay up for a 1am webmeeting (there were no times good for everyone between the US-UK-Australia). I could have gotten out of it too, but I didn't feel like that would be fair… So I have to find something to entertain myself another hour that won't make me sleepy. Bah.
Having my car in for yearly repairs and this 1am meeting have messed up my sleep and gym schedule for 3 days. I feel very off track.
I love how things can go from a shitty day of computer trouble, late assignments and missed opportunities to an awesome day of new possibilities and openings just by opening up DD and my email. I put out a couple applications for jobs and internships in illustration and industrial design last week and I got an online interview for Tuesday. Only downside is if I do get the job, it might mean moving to London which might be a bit of a leap. Even so, could be major awesomeness.
Wish I was in England. :(
Man, some of these university websites are impossible to navigate! I'm having to contact one school to ask them about their tuition, admission requirements, etc. Isn't that the sort of thing you have a website for?
And what does that say about a design school? D:
