Well
I was not able to complete the process because there was another hidden
stumbling block, so the site will stay on its very expensive super
redundant system that we don't need and we'll be bleeding money on that
for no reason till we can overcome it.
Because Linode sux…

-Have
to change over to a 64 bit system before we can change to a cheaper
hosting plan… But that could break the site unless it's handled by
someone who really knows what they're doing.

So, I think I converted it over correctly? I don't see anything exploding. Anyone having any NEW issues?

The only thing I am noticing is that the site is loading SUPER FAST from the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 I am currently using.
JNP- Did you make the server switch already?

Oh cool, so you did it JNP? That's awesome! We're lucky to have you around. :)

For the last week or so, I've been waking up every morning and checking my weather app to see the forecast: "SMOKE." There are wildfires going on in the province next to mine, and all the smoke has been blowing over. So it's been strange and hazy and dark outside, and also cooler than usual. The other day I tried to go out for my usual bike ride and by the time I got home my eyes were hurting and I was getting a bit wheezy.

I bought a new scent in the deodorant I've been using and I'm seemingly horribly allergic to it. -_-

I'm going to visit my best friend in Ottawa in a couple days! As much as I've been enjoying sitting on the porch of my museum and reading, it will be nice to have a little adventure.

All I did was copy the current Linode Disk and convert it to 64 bit to see if it'd break anything. :P
If it had broken the site I could have used the original disk to revert the changes. Then I'd have followed Linode's tutorial to build a 64 bit environment from scratch. Which actually didn't look very long or hard. But this method was still simpler to do and test 1st.
If it's making the site faster then YAY!
I recommended to Ozone for us to give the site about 3 days before he considers this a successful conversion. Just to be sure before there's no going back. Though I'd still be able to build the server if we did find something broken later.

He's just still sleeping I suppose :P

Shrinking the disk size from 200 gig to 20 gig may have had a speeding up effect as well. the guy who was advisinng me about this (Joe Rayhawk at Fairly Stable Hosting), advised me that a smaller size runs more efficiantly for our setup.

Thanks for doing the cloned test JNP. I've tested page editing and that works ok, I'm trying out the java text editor here to see if there are any issues.
I think ULTIMATELY, we'll need to switch over to a 64 bit deployment of our linux setup to avoid issues down the line when we add fixes or new features, but we can do that later.
I'll change the disk over on Wednesday in the early hours. (PST time)

Can't wait to see what the changes will be like.  Maybe I can finally stop seeing yellow when I close my eyes…

This looks like the storms have finally taken notice of this island.  First we nearly get hit by Vongfon.  This year we get slammed by Typhoons Bavi and Dolphin, and now grazed by Chan Hom.  And now Tropical Storm Nanka is approaching (should be here around next week).  So after twelve years of no typhoons they decide to come after us?  O_O'

And then there was that one year long ago where we had five typhoons, one after the other.  And then there was another that completely missed us, only to turn southeast and give us a direct hit…

I'm excited for site changes too!
Also yay DD awards, I will have to go through my fav comic lists and put some thought on who I want to vote for!!

I think I'm getting sick. :( It's the absolute worst time…I'm going away in two days, and then my sister's wedding when I get back. I don't have time to be sick! I could probably use a relaxing day at home tomorrow, but it's a bit tricky calling in sick to work…we have to have two people on, so often if someone can't come in it means we just wind up being closed that day, and then the board gets upset with us. Also, I feel like it would look bad to take a sick day right before my little vacation starts.

Taking a sick day just before vacation is a time-honored tradition.  It's called padding your time off. I nearly took a few sick days a couple of times last couple of weeks and the wife literally pushed me out the door.  Stomach aches, exhaustion and just plain "blahs" Can't work on anything just so worn out.

And my suprevisor is reaching new heights of stupid and stubborn.  He's forced to fill a shift now and I'm forced to talk to him.  Sometimes I want to slap him up the side of the head.  But then comes in patience of acceptance of the errors that others make.  I've given up teaching people who will not listen.

Okay.  I'm tempted to try out this Patreon thing.  What exactly is it though?  All I can see is that it's a site where your fans send you money for any content you create…

OK, I will be shutting down Drunk Duck for a little while while I try to transfer us to a cheaper server. This will take maybe 1 or 3 hours.

HO-FUCKING-RAY!!!!!!!

I finally managed to switch the server over to a cheaper damn plan, yay! We will be running a very small profit each month if project wonderful ad money keeps up… no more than a measly 10$ or 20$ but it's a start…
And of course I'm still out a few hundred that I've paid for it all so far… But this means no more bleeding money!

Hooray going ahead! We're no longer on enough server hosting space for a major porn site!!!! There's STILL room we don't need, but this is good for now.

———-

The server switch was not straight forward… there were a lot of unexpected steps and pitfalls. It WENT smoothly at each stage, which was friggen wonderful (never happens with computers), but there was a lot of back and forth with different steps I didn't know I'd have to do first and you're always dobting it's going to work out. :(
But it bloody well did!

LOL! Well it took years to get to this point really, and two months of getting advice from an expert and then organising the right times to do it and then failed atempts, more advice, setting up new times, reading through more help documets etc…

But it all paid off when I did it just now and the process, when it was actually under way and things were done in the correct order, didnt take very long at all. ^_^

That's so awesome, oz! I feel like being able to make changes has been in the completely indeterminate future for so long, and now there's the beginning of a way forward. :)

I hate traveling…the traveling itself, I mean. I like being in new places, but planes and taxis and whatnot always take it out of me. I find airports particularly stressful, despite not being afraid of flying at all. The combination of everyone being so serious and the prospect of motion sickness is always kind of bleh. And now my plane has been delayed by about an hour, so that's even more of my day that I have to spend here. On the plus side, I have a couch near a window and an electrical outlet for my phone.

This is a landmark occasion for this site. It will be known as Drunk Duck Independence Day when we finally cut ties with Linode and started hosting on a new indie server.

Fantastic job for all of the behind the scenes work that has gone into this move. Standing ovation.

Thanks Scarf, Hippie, and Kawaii!

We're still on Linode though. We decided to stay because it would be easier- it would cost a LOT extra to migrate off ($500), and then it would be a nightmar trying to get the DNS details for the drunk duck url changed to a new host… even the advice from Joe Rayhawk  at Fairly Stable hosting was to stay with  Linode.

The only thing we miss out on is a dedicated sys admin, but jnp and i are learning slowly…

It IS a landmark though: now we're self sufficient. No money morries. Whuch means condidering programmers and stuff is a possibility, not a fantasy now.
