On a related note, have you noticed that folks from the USA refer to themselves and their production as "American," claiming the entirety of two continents. Wouldn't United Statesian be better?Technically, the short name for the country is "America"
"United States of America" is the proper name just like "Republic of Ireland" or "Commonwealth of Australia" – which are called "Ireland" and "Australia" respectively (not "I'm a Commonwealthian." )
Okay, so our country is named after our continent (or vice versa). It isn't that novel. A "New Yorker" can be referring to city locality or state locality. That is considerably more confusing, imo. ;)
