I broke my own rules:

This is me back when I was a middle aged woman boy.

Not bad, was just writing some shit for uni and I started to think back to my roots. Figured I'd procrastinate by checking out the ol DD. Man…Cool to see there are still a few people around, but dang…It's like living in a ghost town.
Takes me back though. I joined this site 8 years ago. That's like….8 entire years. It really makes you think.

It makes me think about years. They're long… 365 days in most cases.
Not long enough!

It IS Quiet here, but I think we're slowley improving. A teeny, teeny bit at a time. Clawing people back!
The forums are pretty buggy so that's part of the problem. JNP is talking about replacing these with a standard BB forum… which would work WAY better, but we'd al need to re-register, unless he can find a way to auto port all the logins across from the database.

My sister's gonna love this.  According to this she only looks half her real age as does my friend Tony.

For me it is very accurate though erring on the side of caution by adding a couple of years.

My guess is that it was calibrated to only a very specific sort of face… Going by the test images I'll make a guess that it was done by Indian people using mainly Indian faces, so it would likley use features from that ethnic backgound that signify age.

It gets some people right, but other types it always messes up… I think faces that have shadows in them or hollow cheeks, heavy brows, distinctive noses etc tend to fool it. Basically it can't cope with people that look young but have "stonger" features.

Myself, Petter Selleck (I'm not comparing him to me!), Steve Jobs, Lori Petti, My friend Bianka (Pinky TA model), Mathew McConnehy, Franka Potente, and Owen Wilson so far all tend to test wierd with different pics at different angles and ages.
It's interesting to see, also, good to know I'm in such illustrus company!

I tried a bunch of pictures of various people and the ages almost seem random…some were just outrageously off (like this picture of Sessue Hayakawa, which it read as 53), and they seem totally arbitrary. But then I tried several different photos of myself, in different makeup and different angles and they all read between 24-27. Which is wrong, but not too far off. So yeah, oz, I think you're probably right that it just works better for some types of faces than others.

I've been having just about the worst weekend ever. I mean, nothing disastrous happened. Just all around having a bad time and feeling very very grumpy.

Wow.  Found this guy while doing a bit of research on swords for a game I'm working on (attempting to draw a sprite sheet at the moment)…
Skallagrim
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4f88E12ldyY

I hope to one day create a game that's inspired by the Sword of Valis, a fun platformer with swords.  Well… 'til some company aquired the IP and attempted to make it into a Hentai series.   :(

@Hippie. That gentleman is clearly 1 million years old… Going by the how-old logic :)
This is where they got their code from: http://www.projectoxford.ai/demo/face
- if you scroll though the code on the right, at the bottom is the age. It says it's not good at working out ages.

@Lonne- Skallagrim is pretty entertaining. Him, Scholagladiatoria , and Lindybiege are the trinity of weapon info.
https://www.youtube.com/user/scholagladiatoria is the best of the three because he specialises in swords, studies them, teaches fighting, writes books about it etc.
Skallagrim is a very talented video editor and crosses over into videogames and guns. He does more pop culture stuff than the others. Lindybiege is more generally historical.

Yeah.  I sampled the other two, but I find Skallagrim more entertaining because he tends to go into popular culture.
At the moment though I'm trying to find a good running animation that I can study where a character is running with either a greatsword or a claymore.  I could try to use the way Valis runs, but she carries a rapier which is light enough for her style of running.

Haha! If you watch more of the vids by those guys you'll find out that rapiers are the same weight as a big one handed swprds and that the sword that character uses is way too short to be a rapier. ;)
That'd be a smallsword. And those were light, used for thrusting.

There's a good article on big greatswords here: http://www.thearma.org/essays/2HGS.html#.VUc5MDi-YsQ
They're not very heavy, only weighing a max of out 3.5kg, but they're BIG, LONG and awkward so I think running with them would be like someone running with a big long pole… you'd have to be careful how you waved it about so it wouldn't stab into the ground and pole vault you into something…

That's true.  Carrying a large weapon would have to be handled carefully so as not to look too weirdl  I think there's one game for the 3DS called "Code Princess" where the title character is running around a with a huge blade in her hand…  and it's so big and heavy that she's dragging it along the ground…

I had always thought of the thing as a rapier type sword due to how thin it was compared to other blades.  So it's basically a small sword?  Gonna have to look that up.

Also ran into an article about Conan's sword.  People call it a Bastard Sword, but Wikipedia calls it a longsword.  Now I'm confused…  then again I'm not a sword expert by any means…  X_X

Rapiers are thin but very, very long. Longer than a longsword. If it's an older, shorter kind of rapier though then the blade is wide. The shorter and wider it is then it becomes a broadsword. All of them are one handed swords and have elaborate hilts with a lot of bars protecting the hand.
- Small swords are short and thin with a simple hilt.

Really, Conan's movie sword is neither a bastard sword nor a longsword. The blade is way too short and the hilt is way too long. It was designed using the proportions of a katana, which is what the actor's sword fighting style was based on in the film: kenjitsu. They were all trained by a Japanese swordmaster.

-A longsword has a long blade and a two handed hilt. A bastard sword is in between a single handed arming sword and a two handed longsword, often with space for a "hand and a half" on the hilt.
The hilt on Conan's sword is longer than that on a two handed sword, and the blade is short for a one handed sword… and the blade also has a long unsharpened ricasso section like what you'd get on a greatsword.
It's a very singular sword!

So Arnold Schwarzenegger would only a little out of place in a samurai film?!?  Also found a Conan the Barbarian wiki page that describes the weapon as an "Atlantean Sword"…
http://conan.wikia.com/wiki/Atlantean_Sword
And here's the Valis Sword from its wiki
http://valis.wikia.com/wiki/Valis_sword

I guess for lore purposes I can design a sword based on its real world counterparts.
I'm basing the character off my main Neverwinter character…

Haha, yeah, the Valis sword is definitely NOT any kind of rapier. In the pic on the wiki it looks like a shortsword.

They can call those movie swords what they like, but they're really just compromise prop swords. I still like them though because I love the first film.

That sword in the pic there is an oversized version of an Italian Cinquedea sword. Usually they're only as long as big dagers, but there were some sword length ones. None as big as in that pic though. :)
Comically wide!

Something funny is going on in the office.  Everyone's hours are being cut with no explanation.  Then again, as an "at will" employee he can do anything he wants.  Thing is… the office is usually open about these things.  But right now it's anything but open…  Then again he did fight against the move to raise our local minimum wage to $8.25 an hour and this may be a way to "retaliate" against that…

8.25 is less than I made for shitty retail positions. I'd jump ship to a better company.

I had my orientation yesterday for my new job at the historic house! It's a really cool little place…lots of little nooks and crannies. It's the kind of place where you can imagine there being a secret room or hidden cabinet somewhere. It's closed all winter (no heating) so everything in there is covered in white sheets, and all the shades are drawn…it's a bit spooky. I'll be starting properly on the 15th, and then we'll get to clean and set up all the displays for the summer.

I have to admit that I'm a bit nervous about giving tours, though. There are only four of us - two are returning from previous years, and the other new girl has given tours previously at another job. (Slightly surprised I got the job so easily, actually.) So I'm a bit worried that I'll be crap it.

Nearly every company on this island goes by the minimum wage.  So getting out of this company is not an option right now.  I could try sidelining for a while.  A little extra money always helps.

Now if I can get this game off the ground and sell it maybe it'll make things easier (or if I'm extremely but unlikely lucky I can get out of it altogether I can get out of it… though one coworker who hates my guts for no reason tells me that if I try that my boss can sue me)…

The first one might be a bit nerve wracking but I have no doubt you will excel at this. It should be a good confidence builder, especially when you've got the essentials down and you can start throwing in the comedy routines, haunting anecdotes and so on.

Polling day today. Will we have five more years of old etonian rule, bolstered by the anti-europeans, or will it be Red Ed - schoolgirl's dream and star of Shaun The Sheep?

The $200 bill for Linode.com is overdue,  if it's not paid by Monday the 11th the site will be suspended.
So I will pay it out of my own money on Saturday the 9th, maybe with Banes' help.
AFter that we'll take down the spam ads and replace them with Project Wonderful ads as a temporary measure. JNP will do that on Tuesday.

PW ads are too low return to fund the site so that will be short lived until we can set up something better. The site already does enough free promotion of comics so we don't need the space for that.
We'll have to try and set up the Patreon next week… Juuuuust when I'm going away. fuck.

————

WHELP! Brian has paid it.
Ugh, it takes a stick!
But dammit, even though it would've been expensive for me at a time when I couldn't spare the cash at least it would have been the progress we needed. Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
